January 3 was J.R.R. Tolkien’s 126th birthday. This high fantasy author is best known for his books, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, both set in a mystical, magical place called Middle Earth.

On January 13, McMenamin’s is hosting a “Happy Birthday, J.R.R. Tolkien!” celebration at Kennedy School, 5736 NE 33rd Avenue, in Portland. And humans, hobbits, trolls, elves, wizards, orcs, and all other creatures are invited.

The festivities start at 11 a.m. and run “’til late.” Listen to live music and radio theater, watch The Lord of the Rings trilogy on a big screen, and compete in a costume contest.

Here’s the complete schedule.

  • The Lord of the Rings trilogy begins at 11 a.m. in the Kennedy School Theater and continues until the last movie in the trilogy ends.
  • “Hobbit’s Greatest Hits”, a live radio performance by the Willamette Radio Workshop, 3 and 5 p.m. in the gym
  • Costume contest, 4:30 p.m. in the gym
  • Live music by The Van Rontens, a folk and funk grass band, 7-10 p.m. in the gym
