Conditions should be perfect for the Winter Star Party at Paramount Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area on Saturday, January 20. That’s because there’s a waxing crescent moon, a slivered crescent allowing darker skies and great visibility for stargazers.
Join rangers from the National Park Service and astronomers from the Ventura County Astronomical Society to experience the beauty and wonders of the winter night sky. Start the evening with a ranger talk about astronomy from 6 to 6:30 p.m. From 6:30 until 8:30 p.m., view star clusters and nebulae in the Milky Way with the telescopes provided.
The Winter Star Party is outside, so dress in layers in case it’s chilly. Also bring a red lens flashlight instead of a regular flashlight so that the light doesn’t blind other guests.
Hot chocolate will be served to the first 200 visitors.
Paramount Ranch is located at 2903 Cornell Road in Aguora Hills, California, 36 miles northwest of Los Angeles. For directions, visit the Paramount Ranch page. For more information about the Winter Star Party, visit the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area’s Facebook page.
A rainy evening will cancel the event.
