For well over a century, Pendleton, Oregon, has been best known for its annual Pendleton Roundup, which is among the top 10 rodeos in the world. Spectators flock here for one week every September to enjoy the pageantry, parades, live music, and intense competition from the steer ropers, barrel racers, and bronc riders.
Now another rodeo is ridin’ into town without the cowboys and cowgirls. On August 18 and 19, drones will invade the Oregon UAS FutureFarm and wrangle data points instead of steers and broncs. The goal of this first-annual Drone Rodeo is to allow farmers to watch now multiple technologies can work together to provide a more accurate assessment of the health of their crops.
The first day of the rodeo is a flight and data-downloading demonstration of drones at a local potato farm. The data gathered by the drones will be analyzed on the second day at the Oregon Army National Guard Armory at the Pendleton Airport.
