If you’re planning to climb Mount Saint Helens April 1 to October 31, you’ll need a permit. You’ll also need a permit if you climb above 4,800 feet year-round.

The Mount St. Helens Institute will sell the permits starting Thursday, February 1, at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Permits are $22 each (buy permits here).

Five hundred daily permits are available April 1 to May 15, and 100 are available May 16 to October 31.

This year from May 16 until October 31, the Mount St. Helens Institute will hold 10 percent of all permits until the last day of the previous month so that permits are available later in the year. Permit recipients also need to register every climber in their parties before they leave. The institute added the registration requirement this year to improve safety on the mountain.
